Andy Fresien is the principal of SuCasa Design one of the most respected architectural and interior design studios in the Fraser Valley. When the person behind one of BC's most acclaimed residential studios designs their own home, the result is something worth documenting carefully. Andy and Jena's home in Abbotsford is a full-day commission that covered every space in the house. What distinguishes this project from most residential photography in BC is that every decision in the space was made by a designer who lives in it which means the relationship between design and function is genuine rather than aspirational.

The living room is the defining space of the house. A vaulted pitched roof rises over a volume anchored by a fireplace  the kind of architectural gesture that is distinctly Canadian and that this climate justifies. High ceilings, expansive windows, and a considered furniture selection that scales correctly to the room. The natural light in this space shifts significantly throughout the day I spent more time here than anywhere else in the house, and every hour offered something different.

The kitchen follows the same design logic: light, functional, and spatially resolved. A large island creates contrast against the perimeter cabinetry both in finish and in the way it defines zones within the open plan. The numerous windows flood the space with natural light throughout the day. This kitchen photographs differently than most residential kitchens in Dubai or Mexico the quality of northern light in BC is specific, and the design here was made for it.

The basement is one of the most architecturally considered spaces in the house and one of the most distinctly Canadian. A bar area with a dining set that overlooks the backyard and pool transforms what could have been storage into a genuine living space. The view from the bar to the outdoor pool is the kind of spatial connection that only works in a house designed by someone who thought through every room's relationship to every other room.
